The Physician’s Role in Advancing Health Equity

Dr. Uche Blackstock and her sister, Dr. Oni Blackstock have been featured on CNN, MSNBC, RaceForward and have been covered by the Washington Post and Yahoo News!. This episode brings the twin sisters together to share about their unique story as second-generation physicians and leaders in the African American medical community. Their late mother, Dr. Dale Blackstock, inspired them to pursue their medical degrees and to serve communities of color. This episode features their work to reduce health inequities and the role physicians and other care providers have in addressing these inequities. A highlight of the discussion is the need to create a safe environment where unconscious biases can be recognized and discussed so that physicians accept their unique opportunity to improve health outcomes among communities of color. Our conversation also looks at the role systemic bias can play in quality of care and how this is leading health systems to track patient outcomes. We also explore the experiences of diverse physicians and patients. An important element of the work ahead for many systems is to challenge the narratives that can define misrepresent underserved and under-resourced communities and the role that health systems need to in order to create a more just, equitable and trusting healthcare ecosystem.
